Hormonal imbalance In Women Affects Fertility

There has been a lot of media attention given lately to a condition that affects many women which can seriously impair their fertility.  It is called polycystic ovarian disease and it is a hormonal imbalance that is thought to occur due to insulin resistance.   Dr. Ricardo Azziz, a reproductive endrocrinologist with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said "Polycystic ovary syndrome is actually the single most common hormonal disorder of women. It affects one in at least 14 women."  More...

Link Found Between Obesity and Infertiity

Doctors have long known that women who are overweight have a more difficult time in getting pregnant, but haven't really know why.  New research has found that there is a protein in cells that surround and nourish the egg that is the link between obesity and impaired fertility.  While there may be drugs available to activate the protein and help them develop into healthy eggs, experts agree the best remedy for the problem is losing weight.

Tomato Soup Boosts Male Fertility?

There's always a new study coming out that suggests "this or that" can help to improve fertility.  I'm a big believer in, "if it can't hurt, why not?."  Some new research in a very limited study suggested that eating a can of tomato soup daily may help to boost fertility in men.  The reason is a substance called lycopene which is found in tomatoes and has been touted as being very healthy in general.  It works in the body better when it is cooked, which is why the tomato soup is recommended instead of eating fresh tomoatoes.  In this case, since lycopene is known to be a healthy addition to any diet, I'd certainly recommend adding it to the diet for any male's who are trying to increase their fertility.

Very cool news story about using yoga as an aid to conception.  The article points out that there are several controllable factors such as diet, exercise and stress which can affect a woman's ability to conceive.  Yoga has always been known to help reduce stress so it may be something to try as it certainly can't hurt.   If you don't want to read the news story, there is a video of the newsclip you can watch instead.

Are Alternative Therapies Hurting Your Chances of Pregnancy?

Some new research has come out claiming that women using alternative therapies along with IVF have a reduced chance of getting pregnant.  This research is likely to cause some confusion as many women turn to alternative therapies to help increase their chances of pregnancy.  The truth is, the study doesn't differentiate between women using herbal treatments and those using relaxation techniques such as acupuncture and/or reflexology.  It makes sense that mixing herbs with infertility drugs could cause potential problems, but it seems ridiculous that stress relieving treatments could do anything other than help.

Natural Methods To Increase Fertility

I am all for using natural methods to try to help women in their quest to become pregnant.  Especially when the diagnosis is "unexplained infertility", meaning no medical cause has been found, natural methods can be extremely successful.  Personally, I found acupuncture to be a determining factor in helping me to conceive, but there are many other methods to try as well.

Frozen Eggs On The Rise

This is a really interesting article about how single women in their late thirties and early forties are dealing with their ticking biological clocks.  These women do not have a current partner to have a baby with, and they know that they are running out of time as far as the quality of their eggs are concerned.  Egg freezing is now a viable option, however it unfortunately has much better results if the eggs are frozen when a woman is in her twenties, not her late thirties or early forties.  The irony is, most women at age 25 are not thinking about the possiblility of being 40 without a partner and wanting a baby at that time.  Read more...
