Hot Baths Can Hurt Fertility

Many men have probably heard the advice to avoid any heat in a certain 'lower body region' if they are trying to conceive a child.  Truth be told, there has never been any scientific evidence to back up the claim that too much heat can damage sperm.  So is this an old wive's tale or is there any truth to it?  Well, some new research does seem to support the notion that men who soak in hot baths or hot tubs do compromise there sperm quality.  More...

Nutrition For Conception

I have been coming across more and more articles lately suggesting that fertility problems can often be overcome by making adjustments in both diet and lifestyle. This especially holds true for couples who have been diagnosed with "unexplained infertility", which basically means the doctors can't find any medical reason why a woman can not get pregnant. Apparently, some studies have shown a staggering 80% success rate in couples with "unexplained infertility" when they make certain changes to their nutrition and lifestyle. With these potential results, doesn't it make sense to try this before turning to expensive, invasive and often stressful infertility treatments?

Certain foods, even nutritious ones, can have such a negative impact on your delicate reproductive system that if you are serious about conceiving, you might consider leaving them off your plate for the time being, if not for good.

Eating Ice Cream To Improve Fertility?

OK, this headline caught my attention for obvious reasons.  I think most women would love to learn of some research proving that eating ice cream can help them get pregnant.  In this study, women who ate low fat dairy products vs. those who ate high fat dairy products (such as ice cream) were compared to see if there was any effect on their ovulation.  While the risk for a certain type of infertility (lack of ovulation) was lower among the ice cream eaters, many experts caution that this is not necessarily due to the eating of ice cream. Procreation Vacation

While there is no scientific evidence to prove it, many agree that stress can play a role in a couple's ability to get pregnant.  It is no wonder then, that the idea of a relaxing vacation to help couples de-stress, and increase their chances of conceiving a baby is getting very popular.  Especially since the struggle to conceive can sometimes take a toll on the marriage.  Taking a break in a relaxing environment certainly couldn't hurt...and may just be what the doctor ordered to increase your chances of conception.

Age is one factor which can contribute to a high risk pregnancy.  Many more women over 40 are having babies, so that contributes to the increase in high risk pregnancies.  But also, more and more women with life threatening conditions such as organ transplant recipients, breast cancer survivors, and even women with HIV are getting pregnant and having healthy babies.  More..

New Fertility Patch To Predict Ovulation

There's a new product in the works, and frankly it sounds too good to be true.  It's been said many times that the most critical factor in getting pregnant is knowing when you are ovulating.  Since conception can only occur during those few days leading up to ovulation, knowing your "fertile window" is key to the timing of intercourse.  Unfortunately, many women are not able to determine when they are ovulating, even though there are various methods available, ie. BBT charting, ovulation predictor kits, etc.  This new product claims it will be able to pinpoint ovulation easily.  Read more...

Reproductive Specialist Names Outrageous Fertility Myths

I agree there are a lot of myths surrounding the topic of conception/fertility.  This article by a reproductive specialist discusses several myths that have been around for some time about getting pregnant.  Being a medical doctor, it stands to reason he would declare something to be a myth if there is no scientific studies or evidence proving that it works.  But in the world of fertility there are so many anecdotal stories relating to some of these myths, I have to wonder if we should ignore them just because there isn't enough scientific evidence.  A good example is the claim that stress can cause difficulty with conception.  This is a very controversial topic and while science hasn't proven it, I'm not sure I agree with the good doctor that stress doesn't have any impact on getting pregnant.  I have heard too much anecdotal evidence stating otherwise.  Read the list for yourself and draw your own conclusions....

Stress Causes Infertility (Fiction) The fact is, that while it is possible, although rare, for stress to cause infertility, it is far more common for infertility to cause stress. The role stress plays in a person's fertility is complicated. Evidence indicating stress as a cause of infertility is minimal. There are rare occasions when extreme stress can interfere with normal ovulation in women and may reduce sperm production in men. Stress can also affect a relationship by keeping a couple from the intimacy of intercourse.

There has been a lot of media attention addressing the use of acupuncture to help women improve their chances of getting pregnant.  However, over one third of the fertility problems of couples is due to problems from the male.  New research points to acupuncture to help improve sperm production and quality.

Evidence suggests that acupuncture can have an effect on sperm production and quality, without causing any changes in behavior or sexual desire. A recent trial published in Fertility and Sterility has shown just how effective acupuncture can be in the treatment of this condition, leading to significant increases in the number of normal sperm and equally significant reductions in structural defects.

Having Babies After 40?

This is a really interesting article about the trend of women postponing pregnancy until later life.  Because of the advances in reproductive technology and the media attention of women in their 40's and 50's having babies, may women are postponing pregnancy until they are older.  But the fact remains that fertility dramatically declines as early as age 30, and many women may find it very difficult to conceive when they finally decide they are ready.

Women's focus on career development -- combined with advances in fertility medicine -- has produced higher-than-ever increases in the birth rates for older mothers. The birth rate for American women aged 40-44 years has more than doubled in the last 25 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control, a greater increase than in any other age group.

A woman's fertility declines at different rates for a variety of reasons. It can be affected by genetics, which determines the rate at which the eggs a woman is born with are used up, and the age of the onset of puberty, meaning eggs could start to be used up earlier. Green Fish Can Help Prevent Infertility?

This article caught my attention.  It's been widely publicized that infertility is on the rise around the world and that male sperm counts have been dropping dramatically over the past 50 years.  One theory is that estrogen, which can be found in water, soil or even food can contribute to male infertility.  So a team of researchers in China have genetically modified a fish so that when it swims in lakes and rivers polluted with estrogen, it turns green.  Environmental officials can then treat the water to remove the problem.  More details....

Widely found in water, soil and even food, environmental estrogen poses a great threat to the reproductive abilities of humans and animals, researchers said, noting even a tiny level of estrogen can leave men infertile.

Frozen Embryos For Sale

The idea of using a sperm bank if a woman doesn't have a partner and wants to get pregnant is generally an accepted practice.  However, there is some controversy over the the idea of an "embryo bank" where you can choose an embryo based on various attributes you might consider favorable.  The controversy stems from the idea that choosing an embryo is too much like "ordering" a child with specific traits.  For more info....

Stressed Out?

The idea that stress can cause problems getting pregnant is often a hotly debated topic.  When couples are having trouble conceiving, they are often told by well intentioned friends and family that they just need to relax.  However, much of the scientific evidence suggests that stress does not cause infertility.  In reality, stress can contribute to difficulties in getting pregnant, but the reason is because of how it can affect ovulation.  For details, read this informative article...

Having Babies Over 45

With recent advances in technology, women are getting pregnant and having babies later and later.  Many are using advanced reproductive technologies, while others are getting pregnant the natural way.  While many older women use donor eggs, many are still conceiving with their own eggs in their early and mid forties.  While this is great news for women who have put off having children to further their careers, it should not be assumed that it is easy to get pregnant once you have entered your forties.  The odds of miscarriage and birth defects increases tremendously.  For more on this topic....

The number of British women giving birth aged over 45 has doubled within a decade, official figures show. The rise is more than found in any other age group over the same period.

New IVF--Improved Pregnancy Rate?

Anyone who's considered or undergone IVF to conceive a baby, knows it is a tremendous undertaking, both mentally, physically and financially.  One big part of the expense and potential for nasty side effects is the drugs needed to stimulate the ovaries to produce many mature eggs.  There is now a new procedure called IVM (InVitro Maturation), which is having tremendous success without the need for expensive stimulation drugs.  More...

It involves removing immature eggs from a woman's ovaries and maturing them in laboratories before fertilising them with a man's sperm, rather than using hormone drugs to stimulate the release of mature eggs.

Seven Fertility Myths

Here's a neat article that lists seven myths about getting pregnant.  See how many you have heard, and if any of them are keeping you from getting pregnant.  Listed here is the first one.  Go to the article if you want to read the rest...

Myth Number One: You should have sex on day 14 of your cycle if you want to get pregnant. You have probably heard that most women ovulate on day 14 of their cycle. This is simply not true. It is based on the calendar method of predicting ovulation. If you have a perfect 28 day cycle, where your luteal phase (the second half of your cycle) is exactly 14 days long, you would likely ovulate around day 14. Most women, however, do not have perfect cycles and even the women who do have regular cycles, usually do not ovulate at exactly the same time each month.

Can The Moon Help You Get Pregnant?

You may have heard of something called "lunar fertility."  It has to do with your menstrual cycle being effected by the different phases of the moon.  The theory, is that with accurate charting, and knowing what phase the moon was in when you were born, you can predict a time of the month when you are fertile and can conceive a child.  This is not the same time as when you are ovulating, which is called biological fertility.  This is very interesting reading although I don't know if it is reality or myth.....Read on for more details.

The lunar fertility cycle works on the premise that you can be fertile during your menstrual cycle when the moon is in the same phase it was when you were born. For example, if the moon was in the waning phase when you were born, then, once menstruation begins during puberty, you will be fertile whenever the moon is waning. It is thought that the reason for this fertile phase happens at birth when the moon arouses certain biochemical and hormonal states in your body, which then continue to influence your body for life.

Avoid Certain Painkillers When Trying To Conceive

When you are trying to get pregnant, it is very important to be aware of what pain medication you may be taking, as some can increase the risk of miscarriage.  Basically, you should avoid all painkillers other than acetaminophen or Paracetamol (otherwise known as Tylenol), which have no harmful effects.  But do avoid ibuprofin, aspirin, and others, which could effect the ability of the embryo to implant into the womb.  It's especially important to avoid these medications around the time of conception, so stay away if you are near ovulation.  Read more....

Pre-Conception Care Demands More Attention

This is a great article on the topic of pre-conception care.  While many women are led to believe that they need to start taking care of themselves (and in turn the baby) as soon as they become pregnant, the truth is that it is necessary to get your health in order several months before trying to conceive.  You need to be healthy when you get pregnant, not as soon as you find out that you are pregnant.  By then, the baby has been developing for a few weeks, and can be harmed in these early weeks if the woman is not taking care of herself properly.
